We love all the spring and summer berries! We have been munching on Mulberries, Huckleberries, and even had a small handful of Dewberries at my dad's. I'm anxiously awaiting the blackberries as I know I can pick enough to actually do something with. The other berries just went straight into little girls mouths. Now if I can just keep Kimber Lee from picking all the green tomatoes....
I just realized I have no idea what a Huckleberry or a Dewbery is. The names of them are so familier probably because I grew up reading American novels, Huck Finn, Ann of green gables and trixi Beldon for examle. And Crab apples What on earth are they?? and why would you eat raw tomatoes??? We do have Mulberies though, the kids love rasing the silk worms but the biggest Summer fruit around here is Mangos
OOOHHHH!!!! Fresh Mangos! My youngest and I would be in heaven for a truly ripe Mango...
A Huckleberry is a cousin to a blueberry, but much smaller and ours are wild. I'm not sure about domestic cultivation of them and between the birds and my girls we never have enough to bake, freeze or preserve. A dewberry is a cousing to a blackberry, but is larger and I think sweeter. I grew up on them in South Louisiana and haven't seen them in Central MS, but I don't know why they wouldn't grow here. Again, any I have picked are wild, but I do know of people planting 'tame' (no thorns) species in home gardens.
